Abstract
This practicum was designed to initiate the use of the databases in an elementary school study. The primary goal was to establish a workable method to incorporate the instruct the teachers of how to use a sophisticated computer application. The peripheral goal was to branch the newly learned skills of the teachers to the students.
The writer began the implementation by administering a pre-monitoring checklist obtained a pre- and post-concept of the teacher's knowledge in the area of databases. Teachers were trained on how to use a database. Teachers were also exposed to various uses of databases and developed their own uses. Specific concentration was given to the design pacing and environment of the training process. Students were also instructed on the basics of how to use databases.
The results of the practicum were positive. Analysis of the data revealed that 100% of the participants met the majority of the behavioral expectations. The objective for (1) 12 of the 15 teachers in grades 3 through 6, remedial and special education, will be able to define the word database and describe its uses. (2) this same group will be able to demonstrate their abilities to create a database and use the various functions, including sorting, arranging, selecting, printing, and copying information with 75% accuracy. (3) 12 of the 15 teachers in grade 3 through 6 remedial and special education will demonstrate their use of a database as a tool to instruction in their classroom and have created a classroom database, and (4) of the students of grade 3 through 6 will be able to give a definition of database and demonstrate their ability to execute the find, range, and select commands.
