Abstract
This practicum was uncertain in an effort to Improve the education of learning disabled and at-risk ninth grade students in regents level courses. The goal of this collaborative consultation was to implement the Resource Teacher Consultant Model by having individual teachers work collaboratively with a resource room teacher. The project was expected to, and did impact on two groups of students (six learning disabled and five at-risk youngsters) in tour different classrooms. Improved teaching and learning was accomplished through analysis of teaching style and learner needs and creation of strategies to meet those needs. In addition to meeting all of the expected outcomes set forth in the project proposal, several unanticipated results occurred. One, teachers worked as a group (or team) helping and supporting one another, as much as they worked on the one-to-one model. Two, the variety of interventions, some requiring outside personnel, undertaken on behalf of the at risk youngsters far exceeded what would have been done fur these youngsters by any individual teacher. Finally, the benefits to teachers, students and the overall educational process of ninth graders is far reaching and the project results suggest several avenues for future study and work.
