Abstract
This report describes the development and implementation of a training correctional program for staff employed in a correctional facility. Areas of need which were addressed include the legal requirements of training, the development of a comprehensive training program for staff in the absence of experienced staff and documentation of training, This MARP established a system to determine the qualifications and training needs of correctional employees by job category. A methodology, role-playing, was developed and implemented. All levels of staff were involved in initial planning of the training and supervisory staff was involved in instruction. In addition, responsibility for learning rested with the trainees, not trainers. Orientation programs, pre-testing and post-testing, and in-service training were used to increase and then measure the effectiveness of the correctional staff. In addition, the MARP provided staff development in mandatory areas required by the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC). The MARP, also established guidelines for the documentation of staff training to minimize the liability of the correctional facility. As a result of this MARP intervention, staff mastery of the required IDOC skills increased from 11% to 80%. A score of 99.4% was obtained on the facility operational audit which measured employee knowledge of IDOC policy and procedures. Every staff member involved in the training committee received promotions at the MARP site or within IDOC because of correctional staff motivation to continue their education. Vincennes University established the MARP site as a regional extension.
