Abstract

Since 1996, the Community College of Southern Nevada has offered the only associate of applied science degree program in commercial photography in the state. This program offered a basic introduction to digital technology in the electronic imaging class but lacked more advanced courses in digital technology with a focus on commercial photography.

The college was interested in enhancing its digital photography technology curriculum to prepare students better for the world of advertising photography. This project was designed to develop an associate of applied science degree in digital photography for the Community College of Southern Nevada.

The results of the study and the review of literature showed that curriculum evaluation should serve to determine student success in learning to address concerns related to the appropriateness and completeness of objectives, content, instructional plan, and presentation of the course. Continuous curriculum evaluation ensured the participation of students and faculty, formulation of objectives, translation of goals into curriculum experiences, measurement of academic success by conducting observations, and provision of recommendations for improvement.

Areas of concern identified for program development included: (a) curriculum content; (b) financial needs; (c) personnel requirements; (d) written policy/procedures; (e) equipment needs; (f) qualifications for instructors; (g) competencies, skills, and abilities that should be developed by students to succeed, and (h) implementation and evaluation of the degree program at the Community College of Southern Nevada.

The procedures to develop the degree program included (a) a review of literature; (b) a review and analysis of digital curriculum outlines secured from other institutions offering similar courses; (c) collection of information from colleges, universities, and a business offering digital photography to collect information about curriculum/course /degree content, (d) equipment/financial needs, (e) instructor qualifications, (f) student skills development, (g) an evaluation plan, and (h) the implementation process.
