Abstract

The purpose of this applied research project was to develop a facility plan to assist in the planning and design needs of a new sport and recreation facility and specifically the sports medicine portion of the building to enhance athletic training services to student athletes. A plan for implementation and evaluation was also developed.

There were four research questions prepared, researched, and answered for this project.

1. What are university best practices in regard to athletic training facilities?

2. What is a plan to incorporate best practices in athletic training facilities?

3. How should the plan be implemented?

4. How should the plan be evaluated?

The development and evaluation problem solving methodologies were employed to address the research questions in this project. The procedures included (a) a comprehensive review of literature, (b) the establishment of research project formative and summative committees, (c) benchmark questionnaire distribution and analysis, (d) site visits and the establishment of criteria for questionnaire development, (e) group interviews and analysis, (e) strategic plan development and evaluation, and (f) plans for implementation and evaluation.

As a result of this research, a facility plan for the planning and design of a sports medicine facility within a sports and recreation building on an NCAA college or university campus was developed and included an assessment instrument and plan for implementation and evaluation. The facility plan included specific plans for the training room including the appropriate size, location, layout, and equipment.

The plan also includes items related to athletic training services including the exercise areas and the relevant equipment. Further, specialized rooms such as hydrotherapy, laundry, and storage were discussed. Specific planning and design concerns regarding electrical and water sources were included in addition to drainage and special access entry points.
