Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation process of upgrades at a community college in the southeastern United States. This study examined the successes associated with implementation and problems that were encountered when a new system or system upgrade was performed. Reviews of problematic and nonproblematic systems were also examined to determine what process should be repeated in order to render a successful implementation. Best practices were extrapolated from the review of literature and interviews and surveys of implementation teams and users.

The researcher explored five areas. She (a) outlined the evaluation criteria for system implementations obtained from the review of literature, (b) compared the developed criteria to the implementation process through gap analysis, (c) revealed best practices for a successful implementation from past implementations, (d) designed and validated the evaluation tool used to identify user competencies of the implemented system, and (e) provided an evaluation report recommending the best practices for a successful implementation affecting community colleges.

The survey results were instrumental in identifying gaps in the system implementation process and in helping with the development of the suggested plan for future implementations. Based upon the results of the study, the researcher recommends that the suggested plan for implementation be used as a guide for future implementations of systems for users, administrators, and functional users. Administrators should determine the need to submit the plan as policy or assess the need to implement. The findings of this study would be submitted to the administration of the college.
