Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a training program for the faculty of a private elementary school on executing the protocols, roles, and responsibilities defined in the institution’s crisis-management plan. A formal training program for the faculty had not been developed, and administrators had no measure by which to assess the faculty’s competency and confidence to perform the protocols defined in the plan. The objective of this evaluation was to determine if a custom-designed training program improved the faculty’s ability to implement the institution’s crisis management plan.
The research questions for the study focused on (a) the components of the crisis management plan that should be incorporated into the training program, (b) the level of competency and confidence of the faculty to implement the roles and responsibilities under the plan before and after the training program, and (c) the faculty members’ perceptions regarding adequacy of the crisis-preparedness training before and after the program. The study utilized an evaluation methodology. A formative committee of experts reviewed the training program’s components and design for adherence to best practices. A survey instrument was administered before and after the training program to document the faculty’s perceptions of their competency and confidence and the adequacy of the crisis-preparedness training.
Observers’ reports documented the actual performance of the faculty in implementing crisis protocols during training drills. A summative committee evaluated the effectiveness of the program based on the analysis of survey results and observed drills and prepared recommendations for future crisis-preparedness training.
