Abstract

This research study was an evaluation of a hospital-based clinical laboratory science (CLS) program focusing on the didactic curriculum. Due to staffing shortages in the laboratory, continued teaching of CLS students in the classroom had become difficult. Incorporating technology in the classroom as well as in online learning had been adopted to ease time spent in classroom teaching by the hospital laboratory staff. Evaluation of the effectiveness of didactic teaching by face-to-face methods, blended methods, and online methods was accomplished by comparing criteria for best and current practice for these teaching modalities.

Five research questions were addressed in the study: 1. What are the expected outcomes of current practices followed in the didactic portion of curriculum currently offered at the CLS program? 2. What do authors and researchers indicate as best practices for a CLS program? 3. What are the perceptions of students, who were previously enrolled in the CLS program, regarding the expected outcomes of best practices for the CLS program? 4. What is the most effective and valid tool to be used for evaluation of the current CLS program? 5. What evaluative data revealed through the performance of an evaluation, which reveals gaps of current practices and best practices as well as recommendations, will be presented to the administrators of the CLS program?

A validated survey was utilized as well as models from the literature that aided in gathering information for criteria development. Formative and summative committees advised, supplied feedback, and validated criteria for this evaluative study. An evaluation report, with recommendations, was developed after an expert panel conducted a gap analysis between current practices and best practices in delivery modalities of the didactic portion of the CLS program.
