Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the PACE (PACE) to determine the value of the program in terms of producing effective teachers to fill the increasing teacher shortage in this southeastern state. This study used the summative evaluation methodology based on the collection and assessment of data.

This study contained 8 research questions: Research Questions 1 and 2 dealt with the review of literature and effective alternative certification programs as well as criteria to establish what quality teacher preparation programs possess. Research Questions 3, 4, and 5 discussed how the PACE program should be evaluated and how participants and principals would rate the effectiveness of the program. Research Question 6 dealt with the formal evaluation scores of PACE participants and comparing these scores to the PACE participants’ survey results. Research Questions 7 and 8 discussed specific recommendations the study produced for the PACE program as well as how these recommendations could assist in the teacher shortage.

The procedures for this study began with a review of literature. From the literature, criteria about model programs were developed as well as instruments to determine the effectiveness of the program. Formative and summative committees were used for expertise and validation. The instruments were employed, and the results were analyzed. Formal evaluation scores of PACE participants were compared to the survey results. The results from the instruments and scores were used to create recommendations for this study.

This study revealed that the PACE is effective in preparing teachers for the classroom. It also revealed that the program is effective for helping to reduce the teacher shortage found in this southeastern state. The study produced 6 recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the PACE program to assist the program in preparing effective teachers for the classroom of this southeastern state. One major recommendation included adding more depth and frequency to certain topics in the PACE curriculum such as classroom management, long-range planning, and development of assessments. Enhancements to these curricular areas would assist PACE teachers in being more effective in the classroom.
