Abstract
This study examined the impact of a newly implemented free breakfast program on student attendance and academic performance in a Southeast coastal school district. The purpose of the study was to determine whether providing free meals, such as breakfast, to all students regardless of economic status, would contribute to a reduction in student absences and improvement in standardized test scores. A quantitative non-experimental approach was used along with an analysis of archived attendance and state test score data.
An analysis of the archived data revealed mixed results between the free breakfast program and increased student attendance rates, as well as mixed results in standardized test performance. Recommendations for future research on the long-term effects of universal breakfast programs in schools were also discussed in this study.
