Abstract
NSU is proud to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of Professor Kandy Lopez‑Moreno, Associate Professor of Art + Design, whose 2024–2025 sabbatical year was marked by extraordinary creative output and national visibility. During her sabbatical, she produced more than 50 new works, fueling numerous opportunities across residencies, exhibitions, workshops, publications, and media features. Professor Lopez‑Moreno participated in several prestigious residencies, including the Virginia Arts Center of Richmond, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Hollywood Art and Cultural Center, and the Broward County Main Library, each providing dedicated time and community for artistic exploration. She also led workshops and artist talks at institutions such as the Orlando Museum of Art, Middle State University, Mercer University, Florida Atlantic University, and public libraries across Florida, strengthening her teaching practice and expanding her influence as an educator. Her national profile grew significantly through features in CitySurfing Orlando, My Modern MET, Colossal, Chicago Hispanic Newspaper, and LUXE Interiors + Design, highlighting her innovative fiber‑based portraits and commitment to spotlighting marginalized narratives. Additional interviews and podcast appearances further amplified her voice within the contemporary arts community. Professor Lopez‑Moreno’s work garnered major recognition, including the Alonzo Davis Fellowship, the South Florida Cultural Consortium Grant, the Crafting the Future Artist Grant, and the Orlando Museum of Art’s People’s Choice Award. Her pieces were also acquired by major collections, including the Cruz Collection, the Eric G. Johnson Collection, the Broward County Cultural Division, the Casa Roberto Marinho Permanent Collection, and the North Dakota Museum of Art. She exhibited widely during the year, with group and solo shows at Art Basel Miami, EXPO Chicago, the Armory Art Fair, ACA Galleries, and institutions across the U.S. and Europe. Professor Lopez‑Moreno’s sabbatical stands as a testament to her artistic excellence and continues to bring distinction and visibility to the university.
