Objectives:

  1. Discuss person-first vs. identity-first language, the historical use of common phrases, and trauma-informed communication.
  2. Understand the American Psychological Association’s Language Guidelines to raise awareness, guide learning, and to infuse equity, diversity, and inclusion into everyday language.
  3. Identify real-world examples that participants can take into their future interactions that can create a sense of belonging or drive people apart.

Dr. Bohdan “Bo” Zaryckyj (Za-Rtiz-Ski) currently serves as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator and Senior Investigator at Nova Southeastern University(NSU). Bo is responsible for implementing a robust prevention education program around Title IX. Additionally, Bo teaches the “21st Century College Student” in NSU Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. He has worked in Higher Education for 15 years, with experience in Residence Life, Student Conduct, Behavioral Intervention, and Title IX. He previously taught as an adjunct instructor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He taught Higher Education Law and Policy, as well as, Ethics and Decision Making. He holds a doctorate in education from New England College.

Summer Book is a current law student at Nova Southeastern University and currently serves as the Graduate Assistant for Title IX, focusing on prevention initiatives and advising NSU’s Title IX Peer Educator program. Summer is also a Legal Intern with NSU’s Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Legal Clinic, a Teaching Assistant for Mental Health Law, and volunteers her time with the Florida Department of Children and Families. Summer is expected to graduate in 2023 and plans to sit for the Florida Bar that July. After graduating, she hopes to work in higher education, public service, and/or child welfare.
