Abstract

The Human Terrain System embeds social scientists with military units in order to study the culture of an operational environment, then transmit the information to commanders with a goal of decreasing kinetic involvement in a region. Research in combat areas of this nature, is rare, so HTS will present case studies of some critical work conducted in Iraq and Afghanistan with local populations that led to decreased hostilities and greater cultural understanding within the brigades.
