Addressing Burnout in Medical Education: A Meta-Analysis of Florida Medical School
Abstract
Burnout and mental health issues in medical students in the United States have become increasingly prominent -- posing challenges for student well-being, patient care, and the future of the physician workforce. Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a loss of personal accomplishment. These traits can develop early in med school, perpetuate throughout their training years, and are reinforced by demanding academic workloads, competitive exams, and emotionally taxing clinical experiences. The purpose of this project is to examine mental health, counseling, and wellness resources offered across eight medical schools in Florida - U Miami, UCF, UF, USF, FAU, FIU, FSU, and NSU - while situating these findings in the broader context of burnout and mental health challenges among medical students. Using a structured review of publicly available information, along with a comprehensive literature review about the incidence of mental health among medical students, this project analyzes the scope, depth, and delivery models of student wellness services to identify strengths, gaps, and common themes across schools. The goal of the project is to highlight disparities in institutional support, inform best practices for wellness programming, and support system improvements that more effectively address burnout, promote sustainable mental health support for medical students and the future physician workforce.
