The Effects of Turkesterone on Mood and Sexual Functioning
Alvin Sherman Library
Introduction: Turkesterone, an ecdysteroid found in the ajuga turkestanica plant, is a naturally occurring compound used historically in Central Asia and India to treat a multitude of health conditions. Turkesterone may hold properties that could improve physical and mental performance. This study aimed to determine the impact of four-week Turkesterone supplementation on mood and sexual function.
Methods: This randomized study included 30 active participants (14 males, 16 females). The placebo group received rice flour; the treatment group received Turkesterone (500mg/day). The participants were instructed to take their respective supplements for 28 days without altering their daily activities, diet, or exercise regime throughout their participation in this study. Two questionnaires were recorded before and after the 28 days: Profile of Mood States (POMS) and a sexual functioning survey.
Results: Using an independent sample t-test, delta scores of both groups were analyzed. Results showed no statistically significant differences between groups for arousal(p=0.06422), orgasm (p=0.9400), or masturbation frequency (p=0.6909). Results also showed no significant differences found between groups for total mood disturbance (p=0.2825).
Conclusion: Results indicate four weeks of Turkesterone supplementation of 500mg per day does not significantly affect mood or sexual function in active individuals.
