Nothing More Powerful Than Love
The unquestionable power love has over all things is illuminated in early world literature. Emotional control is lost as characters misbehave under the domination of love. In thestory of Ceres and Proserpina from Ovid‘s Metamorphoses, the cravings of love instilled by Cupid make individuals act selfishly and out of character to fulfill their passion, going to any lengths to accomplish their desires. Both maternal and romantic love instill a form of madness that causes characters to harm others. Still, stories such as those inMetamorphoses offer reassurance that powerful emotion endures, even in a contemporary world that privileges materialistic security over love.
