Abstract

According to the author, when discussing images of the black woman, literary critics have most often emphasized the author's ideology rather than view these images as forming a part of Afro-Cuban reality. According to the author, whites viewed the rumba as a sexual expression, unaware that elements in the dance were actually tied to Afro-Cuban religious rituals and practices.
