Abstract

Excerpt

Bienvenido N. Santos ranks as one of the Philippines' three best living writers. Because his development as first a short story writer and then as a novelist has paralleled the curve of development of Philippine literature in general1 he is important as a representative of his culture as well as important, especially in mid and late career, in his own right. Since critical acclaim has centered around his prose fiction, however, it is possible to overlook his substantial achievement as a poet. The poetry is worthy of critical analysis not only for the same reasons that the prose fiction is, but also because the poetry reflects a coherent and thoughtful world-view, set in the present but carefully predicated on the past.
