Abstract
The foster care system can be compared to a safety net for vulnerable children, providing security and protection to those in unstable or unsafe environments. The placement within the system is temporary, as youth are required to transition out of the system as soon as they reach the age of maturity. Mental health professionals play a critical role in supporting youth as they age out of foster care. Nevertheless, there is insufficient evidence on the training that mental health professionals receive to support youth transitioning out of care. The purpose of this applied clinical project was to examine existing literature on youth aging out of foster care and the training that mental health providers receive to support these youth transitioning out of foster care, and answer the question: “What training do mental health professionals receive to help youths transition out of foster care?”
