Abstract

Successful parents are defined as parents who can provide financial and emotional support to their children and be able to meet the financial obligations of living in a household if they cannot live with someone else. There was a gap in research on how young parents access resources and how they found resources. The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences and challenges of young parents associated with accessing resources related to social services, from the perspective of young parents. A qualitative design was used for this study to focus on the in-depth exploration of phenomena. There was a total of 8 respondents in this study. Individual interviews were used to answer the four research questions, which provided insights into experiences and challenges related to seeking and obtaining social services for young parents. The researcher utilized Critical Theory Research (CTR) as the theoretical framework. Three themes were discussed for research question one, including challenges around finances, childcare, and loneliness. There were two themes for research question two, that focused on generational differences and the desire for independence as challenges to seeking services. The complexity of paperwork and service offered in the hospital were two themes discussed related to challenges in acquiring resources. Finally, the ease of maintaining resources was discussed for research question four. A significant implication of this study is the importance of independence and support. Keywords: Social services, young parenthood, assessment tool, support system, resources
