Abstract

Research shows that patients receiving chemotherapy are not always certain of what to expect from their upcoming treatments, which increases their anxiety levels and leaves them unprepared for this life changing event. While the interdisciplinary team at a comprehensive cancer center works together to provide clarity and reduce anxiety, they do not have the tools to measure patient satisfaction from the chemotherapy education provided. This study focused on utilizing an appreciative inquiry approach with health care professionals in providing them with training on a patient satisfaction questionnaire. These health care professionals currently work in a comprehensive cancer center with patients receiving chemotherapy. The objective of the training was to obtain feedback from the health care professionals based on the strengths of the questionnaire and then collaboratively enhance it for future use. The idea behind the training was to provide a tool to better support and prepare oncology patients on an educational level about their chemotherapy treatment plan. The ultimate goal with the patient satisfaction questionnaire was to create a tool ready for implementation at any comprehensive cancer center. Appreciative Inquiry was utilized as the method of data collection and analysis. Using the 4-D Cycle, 4 major themes emerged: connections, continuous learning, evolving patient satisfaction questionnaire, and enhanced questionnaire. The findings indicate that all participating health care professionals found the questionnaire to be useful and supportive in meeting their patient’s educational needs.
