Abstract

Abstract Loss is defined as being deprived of or being without something one has valued, and this includes the experience of separation. Disruption to or loss of significant attachments is referred to as bereavement. It almost inevitably produces intense, overwhelming reactions, known as grief (Parkes, 1996). Once a loved one has transitioned, the funeral planning process begins. Not only do families have to deal with making funeral arrangements, but there are other “needs” that must be tackled. I personally had an experience with the sudden loss of a loved one; following the funeral it became clear that my family needed more help. It also became clear to me that if my family needed more help, there were probably other families out there like mine that needed more help too. For this study, action research methodology will be utilized to answer my research question, “Would housing a licensed MFT in a funeral home setting be a useful tool to access and help service the needs of bereaved families?” Keywords: loss, grief, funeral, funeral home, licensed marriage and family therapist
