Description
You want to talk about change over time? Let's talk about this cicada.
In 2008, it began as a tiny egg laid in the bark of a tree. About six weeks later, it hatched into a nymph, fell to the ground, and burrowed into the soil. There it remained for 17 years, slowly developing out of sight. When the soil finally warmed to around 64°F, it emerged, climbing up a tree, or in this case, a barbed wire post, where it shed its exoskeleton and transformed into an adult. Just in time to get photographed by me! And then continue on its way, beginning the cycle all over again by producing the next generation. That, to me, is an incredible amount of change over time for such a small insect.
