Neith Nevelson (1946-2023) was a significant figure in the Coconut Grove arts scene, and Miami’s broader bohemian arts community. She was the granddaughter of famed New York sculptor Louise Nevelson and through her she became friends with the likes of Salvador Dalí and Jasper Johns. She was raised in New York City visiting her grandmother’s studio, and later studied fine art in Florence. Her style is loosely Neoexpressionist, and often used unconventional and experimental materials and application methods. Nevelson’s most recognizable series of work were her Nudes, Horses, and Faces/Masks. Her career was covered on television as well as major print media and her patrons included Marta Permuy.
This piece is from her Horses, among her longest running and most established series. The series shows her innate need for freedom, as well as nodding to her equestrian hobbies in Europe during her youth.
