Description

Unzueta was a major figure in Cuban and Spanish art in the early 21st century. His work was popular in Paris and in Spain and also had a presence in Miami, where he had a successful gallery. Unzueta was awarded the Key to the County of Miami-Dade during his first exhibition in South Florida, as well as a Distinguished Visitor Award to mark the notability of his work being shown there. He was the subject of two documentary films by filmmaker Ricardo Vega during his lifetime: Ramón Unzueta: Un peintre, un tableau (2008) and RAMON UNZUETA: en Ars Atelier (2010). His career was covered by various media outlets including the Artburst, the Miami Herald, Diario Las Americas and was the subject of two editions of the magazine Ars Atelier.

He ultimately died at the age of 50 in 2012, creating a scarcity of his work shortly afterwards. Since his death he has been the subject of a major book in 2016 and a museum career retrospective exhibition in 2023. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Frost Art Museum, the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, and the Wilzig Museum.

This piece is a rare surviving original work by the artist, and reflects the influence of film, and particularly the Golden Age of Hollywood, on his art, in this case depicting film legend Bette Davis.
