Description
Building 15 at the Naval Air Station (NAS) Fort Lauderdale during World War 11 was the Junior Bachelor Officers Quarters; JrBOQ where Ensign George H. W. BUSH, USNR, lived for two months in 1943 while learning to operate t.he TBF/TBM AVENGrn torpedo, bomber airplane. Also, this JrBOQ was the home of four of the five pilots who disappeared with FLIGHT 19 on 5 December 1945. Today, Building 15 houses the Naval Surface Warfare Center Detachment assigned to Fort Lauderdale. Of special note, on 6 January 1990, nationally recognized mural artist Bob Jenny, of Fort Lauderdale, dn1fcated to President BUSH a large mural 27 feet wide by 7 feet high in the lobby of Building 15 that portrays TBF /TBM AVENGER aircraft in the traffic pattern of NAS Fort Lauderdale reminiscent of world War 11 flying training days.
