Question

Assume you have a face clock whose hands indicate the exactly correct time on the date of the publication of this issue of The Current. If your clock loses one second per hour, during what calendar year (after 2023) will the clock next display the exactly correct time?

Answer

The clock needs to lose 12 hours x 60 minutes x 60 seconds or 43200 seconds to be accurate again. During a non-leap year the clock loses 8760 seconds (8784 seconds during a leap year.) Thus, it takes a little less than 5 years to get back to the next time it displays the accurate time. That would be 2028.
