Abstract
Acculturative stress is a pattern of responses individuals may experience when they come into contact with a culture other than their own. This paper explores the possibility that Deaf Americans experience acculturative stress as a consequence of their contact with hearing people. The components of a theoretical model of acculturative stress are presented along with a review of relevant research. The potential utility of the model for generating research and developing interventions is discussed.
