Brief Bio / Description of Interviewee

“I found out I had ulcerative colitis when I was in tenth grade. For me, that was something that set me back pretty far with what I wanted with my life at the time–high school, sports and stuff like that. Football was my sport, I loved it. It was something I was pretty good at so I wanted to keep playing through high school. For me, I started having issues where I was having trouble with what I was eating–I was going to the bathroom a lot, feeling fatigued all the time, joint pain. It wasn’t controlled at all. So that was the time where I took myself away from things that I liked doing, I quit football. I felt like I couldn’t protect myself. I played running back so I would get tackled and you’re constantly getting beat up when you are playing. I started my JV season and I started getting concussions. I had two in a six-week span. The next step for me was varsity and that was when all of the health stuff was happening to me so I felt like it wasn’t the best decision to go up to varsity. I felt like I was going to be getting hurt and wouldn’t be able to protect myself if I was getting tired over the course of the game. It kinda set me back. I stopped hanging out with friends as often because I did not want them to know what was going on. I felt like I couldn’t talk to them. It made me separate from a lot of my friends. My mom’s amazing. She always encouraged me to open up to people and talk to them. When I realized I could do that my friends started to support me. They didn’t care. I thought they were going to care. I thought they were going to be like “man that’s so weird.” They were all supportive. So when I got the support from my friends, I realized this really isn’t that big of a deal. That really shifted the way I viewed my interactions with people. I didn’t have to hide things about who I am. I didn’t have to feel like I had to keep them in the dark about what’s going on with my life. That’s something that definitely pushed me to be a more open and appreciative person for what I have.”
