Abstract

Oxidative stress-related conditions result from an imbalance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as harmful free radicals overwhelm our body’s supply of antioxidants. Excess free radicals cause damage to cells, DNA, or protein, creating oxidative stress. The purpose of this presentation is to evaluate the contribution of antioxidant-rich mouthwash in improving the antioxidant capacity of saliva and the prevention of oxidative stress-related conditions in oral health among the adult population. A randomized control trial will be conducted in Nova Southeastern University's dental clinic. A total of 200 participants will be included in the study; 100 will receive the control mouthwash containing no antioxidant sources, and 100 will receive the experimental mouthwash with antioxidant sources containing Vitamin E. The intervention will last three months. The participants will receive two 3.2 fluid oz bottles of mouthwash every two weeks and daily utilize 20-25 ml of the mouthwash. Bi-weekly, the patients will visit the clinic for a follow-up visit to receive more mouthwash, demonstrate the proper use, and track progress on oral health status. Results from this study will support the need for antioxidant-rich mouthwash to prevent oxidative stress-related conditions in oral health. The impact of the intervention will be evaluated on clinical parameters such as periodontal status, gingival inflammation, and incidence of dental caries. Limitations include difficulties in assessing usage and participant adherence. Future research could address potential adverse effects, interactions with other oral care products or medications, and efficacy compared to standard practices.
