Abstract

Objectives: The overall goals of this study were to determine the effectiveness of various cleaning techniques on zirconia ceramic restorations and the corresponding effect on shear bond strength of resin-zirconia interfaces. Methods: Eighty disk-shaped specimens were prepared from partially-sintered yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide blocks. After sectioning, the specimens were wet polished. Except for the control group (Group 1), the other seven experimental groups were immersed in artificial saliva. The specimens (except for the control contaminated group) were then cleaned with various cleaning techniques including: Group 2: Positive control; Contaminated group. Group 3: Water spray and rinsing. Group 4: 37% phosphoric acid (Total Etch, batch, R51858, Ivoclar, Vivadent, Schaan, Lichtenstein) for 60 seconds and rinse .Group 5: Ivoclean according to the manufactural recommendation. Group 6: Ultrasonic bath filled with 99% ethanol for 5 minutes. Group 7: Air abrasion with Silica particles. Group 8: Acetone. Specimens were evaluated with an EDAX detector, while being imaged via SEM, to qualitatively evaluate the cleaning efficacy of different methods to remove saliva contamination. Micro-shear bond strength was evaluated for all specimen. Results: The highest mean value of shear bond strength was observed in group 7, air abrasion with silica particles. The lowest mean value of shear bond strength was observed in group 2, contaminated group Conclusion: Silica particle air abrasion following contamination with saliva yielded the highest mean value of shear bond strength (14.02 MPa) among all groups. This cleaning technique was the most efficient cleaning method.
