Abstract

Objectives: Investigate the wear properties of a novel translucent monolithic zirconia against enamel in extracted natural teeth and compares this to the wear behavior of lithium disilicate. Hypothesis: There are no significant differences in the amount of wear, as measured in micrometers, across study groups. Methods: Three sample groups consisting of n=10 specimens each of 5Y-ZP zirconia, lithium disilicate and natural teeth (control) opposing mandibular lower incisors were subjected to wear testing using a universal wear testing machine and a custom fixture. All lower member specimens (antagonists – natural human lower incisors) were analyzed prior to and post wear-testing using three-dimensional scanning technology to record the dimensions for subsequent measurements. Specimens were subjected to 70 Ncm of rotational force for 250,000 cycles. The differences in height (wear) measured in microns was recorded and analyzed. Samples were also observed using scanning electron microscopy to determine surface characteristics after wear testing. Results: The general linear model (ANOVA) was used to compare means of groups. A significant difference between material groups was demonstrated (p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between lithium disilicate and control (p < 0.001), as well as zirconia and control (p < 0.001), but no difference between lithium disilicate and zirconia (p=0.077) in terms of amount of wear. Zirconia appears to have the least surface roughness (Ra) among all study groups. Scanning electron microscopy showed smooth wear patterns associated with zirconia, whereas Lithium disilicate and enamel appear to have rough and irregular wear patterns. Conclusions: Translucent zirconia (5Y-ZP) appears to be wear-friendly opposing natural teeth compared to Lithium disilicate and enamel. The pattern of wear created by zirconia is smooth compared to other materials. It may be considered as a material of choice in certain clinical situations. Funding: Research is funded by NSU health profession division grant (334539).
