This strategic research project was designed to help a rural inner-city charter school combat teacher attrition to get this school to perform at a high level. This research project aims to identify ways to keep teachers satisfied in their profession by recognizing teachers for their hard work. Through monetary bonuses for student achievement gains, teachers are motivated to help students learn more content and do better on standardized tests throughout the year. With other incentives such as teacher of the month and/or attendance bonuses, teachers can feel acknowledged while being compensated for hard work.
At this public charter high school, the researcher identified a need for students to have highly qualified teachers in a subject area long enough for students to achieve learning gains and pass standardized tests. The teacher retention rate is very low, and to combat low rates, the institution can reward teachers with merit pay based on performance incentives and bonuses. This keeps teachers motivated while competing financially in a career that is considered underpaid while overworked.
The researcher sees rewarding teachers based on performance will improve teacher retention rates immediately. It will help teachers financially improve school morale and create a competitive and communitive culture that motivates teachers to seek new knowledge through professional development. This will help teachers reach students in strategic and innovative ways to help students grow educationally, which will help student achievement levels.
This research project is a plan that enhances the institution's productivity in many ways. Rewarding teachers based on performance motivates them to get students to learn as much as they can to show learning gains on standardized tests. This will improve student attendance, improve school morale, promote a learning culture, and keep teachers in the building and/or in the profession.
