Executive Summary

Improving Accommodations for Students with Special Needs and Learning Challenges in the General Education Classroom: A Strategic Research Project. Prim R. Lewis, 2025: Strategic Research Project, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. Keywords: accommodations, Ministry of Education, sensitization, strategic planning, sustainable development goals

This strategic research project was designed to provide strategies to improve accommodation for students with special needs through the use of Webinars and Virtual Workshops. The journey to completion of the Strategic Research Project has been all-encompassing, instructive, thorough, and informative. The process involved with the identification of the factor to be addressed was done by conducting a strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats analysis. Twenty internal factors and 20 external factors were identified; the factors were narrowed to eight, and I finally selected the factor that was most in need of improvement. The lack of accommodation for students with special needs. Four possible solutions were researched to address this factor. The pros and cons that accompanied these solutions were examined, resulting in the provision of professional development as the most ideal solution. Two strategies were selected to address this solution, and the quantitative strategic planning matrix was used to identify Webinars and Virtual Workshops as the more suitable strategy. Subsequently, a strategic plan was developed to address the problem. The plan addresses practical skills and knowledge that teachers may employ to support students’ growth and development in an equitable manner.

The body of research examined while conducting this research project, including Lovett (2021), advanced that accommodation is valuable to the improvement of equity in education of students with special needs, as it levels the playing field by providing students with equal opportunities to succeed. The research on the use of Webinars and Virtual workshops, accompanied by the action plan, is expected to provide improved teacher competencies, improved academic outputs for students with special needs or learning challenges, and a more positive classroom environment. Based on the research, accommodation is viewed differently as one moves across demographics, and there persists a discrepancy as to what is ideal and whether one form or a combination of accommodation strategies may best suit a student. Therefore, it is recommended that the research in this area be continued.
