Executive Summary

A Strategic Plan for Enhancing English Language Learners’ College and Career Readiness. Desiree Ann Fajardo, 2024: Strategic Research Project, Nova Southeastern University, Abraham S. Fischler College of Education and School of Criminal Justice. Keywords: college and career readiness, curriculum intervention, education, English language learners, leadership, and social-emotional learning

This strategic research project was designed to enhance the college and career readiness of English-language learners (ELL) by integrating critical research into educational practices. As the demographic of ELL students grows, it is imperative to address the substantial disparities in the educational outcomes they face. This project tackles the core challenge of the stark underrepresentation of ELLs in terms of higher educational attainment and career success. It seeks to mitigate these disparities by employing strategic tools such as a strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats analysis and internal and external factor evaluations to draft a plan that bolsters an inclusive educational framework. This framework, strategically developed, aims to ensure equitable access to educational and career opportunities, thereby enhancing the academic performance and long-term career prospects of ELL students.

To address these educational gaps, the project proposes targeted interventions specially designed to meet the unique educational needs of ELLs. This project emphasizes integrating social-emotional learning into the curriculum. This strategy enhances both academic and socio-emotional development, equipping students with essential skills like conflict resolution, effective communication, and leadership. Research indicates that social-emotional learning significantly boosts academic performance, engagement, and motivation, which are critical for preparing ELL students for higher education and the workforce.

The action plan for implementing this strategy includes developing a culturally and linguistically appropriate social-emotional learning curriculum for ELL students, training educators through professional development programs, and fostering engagement with parents and the community. This comprehensive approach also involves piloting the curriculum in select classrooms and establishing a feedback system to continually assess and refine the program based on student outcomes and stakeholder input.

The key recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of this strategic plan include expanding community and parental engagement, providing ongoing professional development for educators, utilizing technology for continuous feedback, and securing adequate funding and resources. These recommendations are vital for the sustainable implementation of the social-emotional learning curriculum and for achieving the long-term goal of improving college and career readiness among ELL students, ensuring they are well prepared for their academic and professional futures.
