Executive Summary
This strategic research project was designed to guide the leadership team of a traditional Catholic high school toward establishing the mindset and theory of change and the implementation of a strategic planning initiative. Recent shifts in culture and trends affecting Catholic schools provide a reason for the need for futuristic thinking to protect the future of Catholic educational institutions. The school’s history and overview are presented. The school’s internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external (opportunities and threats) were analyzed through a SWOT analysis. Solutions and strategies emerged to address the problem and the school’s need for strategic planning. A review of the literature on all aspects of the theory of change and strategic planning relative to secondary educational institutions was sparse. Therefore, research referencing change theory and strategic planning in higher education, nonprofit organizations, and the corporate world is made applicable to this project. The results of this research point to placing a high priority on quality school leadership, faculty and stakeholder engagement, sensitivity, communication, and collaboration in the development and launch of the theory of change and strategic planning initiative.
