Executive Summary
This strategic research project was designed to provide a framework to address and remediate chronic absenteeism and close the achievement gap among students through interactive read alouds. The organization is a Title I school in Broward County, Florida and houses 755 students in kindergarten through Grade 5. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) matrix was used to allocate both scores and rankings of a total of 40 factors according to importance. After an examination of the internal and external factors through the SWOT analysis, it was revealed that chronic absenteeism was affecting achievement gaps at the organization. To address this issue, professional development in interactive read alouds was chosen from four alternative solutions. Through quantitative strategic planning, professional development in interactive read alouds was selected as the solution with a total attractiveness score of 5.22. An action plan was developed and outlined all steps required to effectively implement this strategy. The findings from the literature review for this strategic research project provide a strong foundation to support this recommendation. Such findings are also used to suggest recommendations for further research.
