Executive Summary

The purpose of this Strategic Research Project (SRP) is to comprehensively address the critical issue of school safety, with a specific focus on gun violence prevention at Lake Shore Middle School in the Duval County Public School District. Recognizing the multifaceted challenges posed by gun violence, this SRP aims to contribute to the development of evidence-based strategies and interventions to foster a safe and supportive learning environment for students, staff, and the community.

The identified problem stems from the complex interplay of various factors affecting school safety, with the final focus honing in on the challenge of violence within the school and its surrounding community. This issue is highlighted as a significant concern impacting the well-being of students, hindering academic achievement, and creating an environment that necessitates urgent attention and strategic interventions.

After a comprehensive analysis of 40 factors through the SWOT framework, the chosen solution involves implementing evidence-based violence prevention programs, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration initiatives. This approach is rooted in scholarly literature emphasizing the efficacy of evidence-based practices and the importance of involving various stakeholders to address school safety concerns effectively.

The selected strategy revolves around a holistic approach, integrating evidence-based violence prevention programs, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration to create a comprehensive framework for addressing school violence. This strategy aligns with contemporary research highlighting the significance of evidence-based practices and community involvement in fostering a safe school climate.

The proposed action plan encompasses the implementation of evidence-based violence prevention programs, fostering collaboration with stakeholders such as parents, community organizations, and law enforcement, and conducting comprehensive security assessments. This multifaceted approach aims to create a synergistic and sustainable framework for preventing and addressing violence at Lake Shore Middle School.

Potential recommendations emerging from this SRP include continuous training and professional development for school staff, ongoing evaluation of violence prevention programs, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration among all stakeholders. These recommendations draw on current scholarly literature and best practices identified in the field of school safety.
