Abstract
The California state-sponsored 1987 Elementary Summer Technology Training Institute (ESTTI) at California State University at San Bernardino included a teacher training program on telecommunications. Several hours each week were devoted to teaching the use and advantages of telecommunications technology, including electronic mail, bulletin board systems, and use of EMS-McGraw-Hill's MIX network. Teachers were provided with computers, modems, and instruction in their use. Several tasks were set that had to be accomplished online. Off-line help was also provided to assist the teachers in understanding network functioning. Many of the participants are still using online communications long after the 1987 class and have introduced their students to the tools and advantages of online communications.
