Abstract

This paper focuses on the role of government in the growth of Web-based virtual schools. First, it describes the current evolving situation. It then discusses ways in which U.S. federal, state, and local governments have developed virtual schools, and presents some information about international initiatives in this area. It also identifies similarities and differences among virtual schools. Finally, challenges for Web-based virtual schools are discussed.
