Abstract
The article presents the author's insights on the impact of the economic downturn to colleges and universities, and the phenomenon of older faculty delaying their retirement plans because of recession. It notes that public and private higher education institutions are tightening their budgets because of recession, while students are becoming nervous regarding large tuition increases. It examines issues concerning older faculty members such as the impact of their longer stay in higher education to their institutions and career development of younger fellow professors, and their participation to online teaching. It also encourages higher education administrators to involve faculty in the decision-making process about their workloads, contracts and benefits.
