Abstract
The target college found its aging facility and equipment limited the quality and effectiveness of the education it provided to prospective nurses and allied health professionals. The college sought to increase alumni philanthropy to generate funds for repair and replacement of equipment and acquisition of new technologies. The college had access to endowed funds for student scholarships and had some discretion in how these funds were disbursed and in the selection of recipients. Using six research questions, this study sought to determine whether certain methods of scholarship disbursement were associated with higher levels of subsequent alumni philanthropy.
Using an ex post facto research design, the researcher compared the giving of (a) alumni who had received and who had not received scholarships; (b) alumni who had received merit-based scholarships and who had received need-based scholarships; and (c) alumni who had received large scholarships, small scholarships, and no scholarships. Alumni in the study received identical giving appeals.
The research found no significant difference in the subsequent alumni giving of scholarship recipients and nonrecipients and no significant difference in the alumni giving of need-based and merit-based scholarship recipients. A significant difference was found in the alumni philanthropy of large scholarship recipients versus small scholarship recipients. As a result of this investigation, the college leaders reexamined its scholarship disbursement methods and made recommendations for changes in the disbursement amounts in order to maximize subsequent alumni philanthropy.
