Abstract

The purpose of this research was to implement a family-school-community partnership plan to increase parent involvement and student achievement. The researcher’s analysis of data that concerned results of state-mandated tests and parent attendance at school activities had indicated a lack of parental involvement, especially within some ethnic groups, and this, in turn, correlated to low student achievement.

Lueder's (2000) model for creating family-school-community partnerships, which was implemented in 2003-2004, focused on community involvement and used a variety of activities that formed the basis for a parent outreach program. Specifically, the researcher worked with families and the school staff to increase communication between the home and school. Academic intervention was provided before school and during this year-round school's optional intersession classes.

The researcher’s analysis of the data that were gathered during the implementation indicated that there was an increase in attendance in the parent outreach programs and that there was some increase in test scores. The level of staff contact with parents also increased and became more substantial. Staff contact with parents focused on 2-way communication and on school visits. Further analysis of the data indicated that there were differences in progress that was made in academic achievement between student groups at this elementary school.
