Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if a statistically significant association existed between the responses of parents of middle school students in a Georgia public school district on a parental involvement survey and three variables: eligibility of students to receive free or reduced-price lunch parental marital status, and parental education level.

This study was initiated because of a persistent problem of low academic achievement of the middle school students. There is extensive research related to the importance of parental involvement and the effect of this involvement on student achievement. However, prior to the implementation of this study little was known about this association in the middle school that was the site of the research. The researcher hoped to learn more about the association between parent involvement and the 3 variables.

The researcher used a quantitative research design to determine whether a statistically significant association existed between the responses from the parental involvement survey and free price lunch status, marital status, and education level. The study involved the use of descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, and multiple and linear regression.

The primary finding of the study is that there was not a statistically significant association between the responses of the parents on a parental involvement survey and eligibility of students to receive free or reduced-price lunch, parental marital status, and parent education level.
