Abstract
The purpose of this applied dissertation was to evaluate an instructional-strategies program implemented at a southeastern elementary school. The program was implemented with the intent to increase teacher effectiveness, thereby impacting student achievement. The evaluation sought to determine if the strategies were implemented as designed and the impact and effectiveness of the program. The research also sought to determine what strategies should be sustained and any unanticipated effects.
The Stufflebeam program-evaluation model was used to guide the research. Only the process and product evaluation types were used. The school’s principal and district’s instructional coach were interviewed, and 40 of 48 teachers completed the survey. Various archival sources were also reviewed, and third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade average reading and math results on the state assessment were also gathered.
Analyses of variance were conducted to determine the effect of the strategies on student reading and math achievement. The results indicated the program had a significant effect on overall reading and math achievement and on the achievement of most of the subgroups. The district’s instructional coach, school’s principal, and teachers indicated they thought the program had a positive impact on reading and math achievement. The results indicated the program met its goal of increasing overall and subgroup student achievement in reading math by three percentage points each year. Based on the results, it is recommended that additional professional-development strategies be provided to faculty and staff to ensure the program is implemented with fidelity.
