Advancing Writing, Research, and Professional Practices: Highlights from Dr. Claire Lutkewitte’s Fall 2025 Sabbatical

Abstract

Dr. Claire Lutkewitte’s Fall 2025 sabbatical provided a focused and transformative period of research, writing, and professional engagement that will significantly benefit both her field and the NSU community. The semester enabled substantial progress on two major book projects. Her first book, Document Design and Writing for an Academic Career, under contract with Routledge, progressed rapidly as she drafted the majority of its chapters. Grounded in contemporary design principles, rhetorical strategies, and the evolving influence of artificial intelligence on writing, the book aims to support faculty across disciplines in crafting effective academic documents—an area where formal training is sometimes lacking. Her second project, Inclusive Hiring and Job Market Practices in Rhetoric, Composition, and Writing Studies, stems from a nationwide research study examining the rhetorical dimensions of academic hiring. During the sabbatical, she completed key sections and a book prospectus, which received strong feedback from reviewers and is now under consideration by the editorial board of the National Council of Teachers of English. Dr. Lutkewitte worked with her colleague, Dr. Juliette Kitchens, on the two book projects. Dr. Lutkewitte also presented at the Council’s annual conference, where she connected with publishers and attended sessions that informed both book projects. Her sabbatical learning is already shaping her teaching—particularly in her Writing for Technologies course, which has been revised to address the ethical and practical dimensions of AI. She has also shared AI-related insights with colleagues, strengthening campus-wide conversations around writing and technology. This highly productive sabbatical enhanced Dr. Lutkewitte’s scholarship, expanded her professional networks, and elevated NSU’s profile in writing studies.   More information on Dr. Lutkewitte and her sabbatical: Sabbatical Highlights Video Claire Lutkewitte, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Lutkewitte’s interests include writing technologies, FYC pedagogy, writing research, and graduate programs. In her book Stories of Becoming, she demystifies the professoriate, compares what current faculty have to say about their job expectations with the realities students might face on the job, and brings to light the invisible, behind-the-scenes work new faculty do.
