Abstract/Excerpt

Describes a 4-yr project designed to collect assessment data concerning patterns of family interaction and adjustment in families with a visually handicapped child (aged 10–17 yrs) and to remediate disturbed interactions and effect social and emotional adjustment in the families. Family assessment methods include direct observations, self-reports, test batteries, and role-play tests. Family treatment strategies include direct instructions, modeling, and feedback. Investigators deem the family-systems approach to offer a useful framework to view the impact of the family on the fate of the child, while simultaneously viewing the impact of the child on the family.
