Abstract

This report will give an overview of the history of the production and development of chemical dispersants. This will include discussion to some real life case studies where chemicals dispersants were used to control oil spills. The report will also describe the chemical composition of dispersants, how they function on oil spills, and the fate of dispersed oil when it enters the water column. It will show some of the impacts that might result in the usage of chemical dispersants in the· marine environment. These studies focus on the impacts on some the most vulnerable and important fauna and flora that play an important role in the production and sustainability of the marine environment. They will discuss effects on the planktonic community, benthic community, coral community, mangrove community, and sea grass community.
