Artist Statement

This poem evolved over the course of one year and was first written in a spontaneous effort to cathartically release a spectrum of challenging experiences. It details the struggles, triumphs and reflections associated with being a mother in medical school.

About the Artist

Gehan “Gigi” Pendlebury is an aspiring military dermatologist, commissioned Navy ensign (ENS), and student doctor at Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. ENS Pendlebury serves in the United States Navy Medical Corps Reserves. She follows her calling to serve current and past military service members with the utmost quality of care using a whole-person approach.

ENS Pendlebury obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology with minors in public health and criminology from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Her research background includes undergraduate research activities in public health and clinical psychology. Her more current research has focused on military dermatology, interventional pain management, traumatic brain injury, chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder among combat veterans and military service members.

She has presented research in other areas of dermatology including a novel, comprehensive dermatological review on COVID-19-related cutaneous manifestations. She just released a new publication titled, Dermatological Conditions Among Military Service Members: A Comprehensive Review and Treatment Recommendations for Deployment. Further research interests include operational dermatology, teledermoscopy, and integrative dermatology. She is passionate about lifestyle medicine and seeking the root cause in healing. She enjoys CrossFit, outdoor exercise, spinning, and most importantly, spending quality time with her family and pets.
