Artist Statement

To me, attention goes hand in hand with patience and is a core part of my creative process. When it comes to my art, I generally ride inconsistent waves of inspiration, meaning I often churn out pieces all in one session, finessing a piece until I am satisfied. In that span of time, all that matters to me is getting my piece as close to how I picture it in my mind as possible, giving it my full undivided attention. I tend to fixate on projects and have a hard time revisiting them once I decide to end the session. This piece captures the parts of the body I enjoy sculpting the most, intentionally and artistically cutting out the parts I don't. I paid attention to the forces of gravity and pulling and folding skin for a more realistic, relatable effect. In the moment, it’s easy to give a piece or a patient your undivided attention, but consistently being present seems daunting and is the hallmark challenge all physicians face. Every patient deserves our full attention, something we know how to give because we have done it before, but know all too well how difficult and draining it can be, not unlike the creative process. Knowing my relationship with creating my art, I acknowledge the challenge ahead of me and endeavor to find ways to manage my waves of hyperfixation to become a better physician. Like the title of this piece, I feel like in order to give our fullest attention to the things that matter most, we must “pick and choose” how we distribute this seemingly limited resource, only using it on the things that bring us joy or closer to our personal goals.

About the Artist

My name is Sana Lulu, an M1 in the Class of '29 at NSU KPCOM. I did my undergrad at USF and later went back to get a Master's of Anatomy at USF MCOM. Sculpting has been a hobby of mine since middle school, first with polymer clay and later with ceramics, although I have been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil. Throughout my childhood I sculpted miniatures of food out of polymer clay before later falling in love with portraiture and sculpting the human body.
